About the Author
Russell Staiff holds a PhD in art history from the University of Melbourne where he was the foundation lecturer in the postgraduate visual arts and tourism program. He began his life in heritage and tourism as a tour guide in Italy. Currently, he teaches in the heritage and tourism program at the University of Western Sydney and Silpakorn University, Bangkok. He researches the various intersections between cultural heritage, communities and tourism with a particular emphasis on Southeast Asia.

Egriougously innacurate: Total violation of the "Law of Primacy"

TERRIBLE BOOK! How dare someone write a book about a topic they clearly don't understand and then push their own agenda!!!

Let me start with my background. I am an adroit Bitcoiner. I run our regions Bitcoin Meet-up Group and I conduct Bitcoin Talks with our local libraries. I am not a Bitcoin Expert, but I understand it very well and I write some Bitcoin Code.

Initially you may see that my review is quite different (opposite in fact) than some of the other reviews. This is understandable given my background and understanding of the Bitcoin Ethos. The lay person might read this book and walk thinking they understand Bitcoin. They would be wrong. They just got a dose of “misinformation” and their understanding would barely qualify as superficial (This is where I could go off the rails on media and journalist (as is the author's day job) and draw many a corollary, but I will stick to the book).

Some may argue the in depth workings of Bitcoin is/are not important nor necessary to most people and to this I fully agree. That being said, if you are going to include these ideas and concepts in your book they must be accurate less they violate the “Law of Primacy”. To paraphrase “It's harder to unlearn than to learn correctly the first time”.

My review; The book had a lot of typos and grammatical errors which I did not bother to keep track of. As a dyslexic, my grammar and spelling can be atrocious so I am not one to throw stones in this department. My real complaint is with the dissemination of misinformation around Bitcoin and the use of weak or unrelated metaphors and analogies.

In an effort to demonstrate that Bitcoin is a “decentralized” network the author used the example of Napster calling it a decentralized file sharing service. Napster was clearly centralized (the opposite of decentralized) hence the ease with which the government shut it down. Napster would have been better used as an example of a “disruptive” technology.

The author then speaks to the SHA256 hash algorithm claiming it produces random numbers. This couldn't be further from the truth. Although the SHA (Secure Hash Algorithm, a cryptographic hash function designed by the United States National Security Agency) generates a hash that looks random it is absolutely deterministic. In other words, the data you submit to the hash will always generate the same hash. Same data will always equal same hash.

“Functionally there is no difference between a Bitcoin transaction and a payment made by check” the author states. This statement shouts ignorance and absolutely belittles the innovations that underpin this new technology. A check can be reversed, stopped, NSF, closed and so many other things Bitcoin cannot. A Bitcoin transaction can be a “smart contract” or a transfer of property, a deed, a trust and so much more. A more accurate statement would have been “Functionally there are very few, if any, similarities between a Bitcoin transaction and a payment made by check”

Then on page 82 the author references back to an analogy of students conducting a math equation to correlate to Bitcoin Mining (aka securing the blockchain and confirming transactions). The author misses again. The claim is that 6 minors are required for confirmations. This is conflating ideas. There has been a long standing idea among Bitcoiners that one should wait for six confirmations on a transaction before spending bitcoins (I personally rarely wait for one confirmation). This does not mean 6 minors. A confirmation occurs when a bitcoin miner includes your transaction into a block (on the Bitcoin Blockchain) and validates this block by solving a cryptographic puzzle. Then all of the minors on the network prove the validity of that block. Each block created on top of the previous block is considered another confirmation. So confirmations are created by thousands of minors participating together. Even one confirmation.

Then after being bombarded with misinformation I finally hit chapter 7 where the author's true intentions are revealed. The agenda is to boost the authors own CryptoCurrency. Chapters 7 & 8 are all about a CryptoCurrency the author created likely in an attempt to “get rich quick”. Well this was the icing on the cake. Here you have a person who clearly demonstrated they know very little about CryptoCurrencies (Bitcoin is a CryptoCurrency) and now they are going to make their own “Bitcoin” and thrust it upon the public. Shame shame shame!!!!

If you are going to write a book make sure you know what you are talking about.

Overpriced. FULL of typos/grammatical errors. Returned the next day.

This book reads as if it was written by a college sophomore. It is FULL of grammatical errors and typos. I returned it after only getting through chapter 4. It was not what I was expecting from a CNBC contributor and a book that was professionally published and listed on Amazon (Kindle copy mind you) for $16.99. There was so much potential for this to be a fantastic book and I give the author credit for his attempt to bring Bitcoin/bitcoin to the general public (2 stars) but I simply can't get past my inability to actually READ any further. Brian...take the book down, pay a few readers some BTC to proof and re-publish.

Bitcoin Big Bang is Also a Grand Slam Home Run

This is a necessary and delightful book with a style that is essential when one considers the emotional and technical confounding subject of digital currencies. The concept of alternatives to banks, credit cards, and even legal contracts is so counterintuitive that the most difficult problem to solve in any book about the subject is how to make it accessible. Accessibility is accomplished with Kelly's "Fast Money" style (he seems to be a celebrity on that CNBC show — and a refreshing voice of reason at that.). He mixes the corny humor so common in the business world with serious economics (albeit narrow) and personal humbleness. Additionally, the book indirectly (and probably accidentally) taps into the passion of the Information Technology world's focus upon everything from "Net Neutrality" to getting the corrupting lobby influence out of our politics that the activist/martyr Aaron Schwartz alerted us all to (see the documentary "The Internet's Own Boy").

Blockchains, miners, digital wallets, enormous computing power, and thousands of autonomous geeks around the world all play a role in creating a universal set of digital currencies that may replace money, banking, bureaucratic nightmares, and the necessary and understandable lack of trust associated with the financial sectors. First we learn about Bitcoin — the powerful emotion and skepticism surrounding it, the concept of currency, and money itself. Then the mysterious mathematics and their secret creator or creators that make it all possible for free — thanks to the open-source concept and the hard-fought rules of "creative commons" (Kelly correctly does not go into these but the IT folks will immediately see the connection).

All through the book we see that he recognizes that the inherent problem with digital currencies is one of universal acceptance by the average person. This caution exists because the technology, the math, the secrecy of the inventor, and the emotional attachment to paper money, etc. makes any rational person very skeptical. So Mr. Kelly, with refreshing humor, walks us through his own doubts and foibles on the path to his own acceptance and bursting enthusiasm.

Personally, I cannot quite get my emotional and cognitive arms around the concept of digital currencies yet. However, thanks to this book, I am aware, excited, and fully understand the revolutionary potential.

Probably the best compliment that a reviewer can give to a book that he or she likes is to find only marginally related things to complain about. So here it goes. If Kelly would just jump on the "big money out of politics" band wagon, he just might find the right tool to regulate digital currencies in a way that works — indeed in a way that would make Kelly's dream possible. That is, toward the end of the book, he makes a big point about his fears of getting the regulatory part wrong — and getting it wrong is virtually guaranteed if elected officials must keep secretly shifting their positions toward the lobby money, thus guaranteeing that there will be no politician in a position to guard against "regulatory capture", which is a legitimate concern originating out of the Chicago School of Economics. This area is something that I wish the book would have at least acknowledged, especially considering its frequent references to the economics of Friedrich Hayek, the Chicago School's hero.

The only other negative about the book, and it is minor, is that Mr. Kelly, like most finance folks, seems to focus too much on the role of the Federal Reserve (e.g., I for one, am on Warren Buffet's side with his gratitude that our government can indeed print money!). Without question, monetary policy is the weaker of the two economic pillars but Kelly and the rest of us are thankful that the Fed. did what it did to mitigate the dual catastrophes of the banking meltdown and the too-late and too-much of a supply side stimulus on the fiscal side. John Maynard Keynes had it right all along but we only see mention of Friedrich Hayek in the book, who Keynes would have persuaded except for his untimely death.

I am glad that I bought the book and I await for the stars to be formed after this digital "big bang". Thank you Mr. Kelly.

An excellent research and reference text.

Gary Leal is best known for his work on free surface flows of drops and as such this book shows some of techniques used to solve for such flows although this is in the minority. Overall this book is heavily research oriented with meticulously worked solutions for trasnport processes in fluid dynamics. The book covers asymptotic approximations, creeping flows and some heat transfer as well as some slender body theory. It comprises many, once, research problems in the fluid dynamics field, each of them worked out in detail. It requires good mathematical skill and knowledge as well as a good physical understanding. If you possess these two prerequisites the book is an excellent source of understanding in analytical fluid dynamics. There is much explanantion of important concepts and the derivation of the relevant equations is well constructed. Unfortunately the book is also quite expensive but has provided me with a useful reference in my current research as well as offering interesting examples of various analytical techniques used in fluid dynamics research.

I've read the book - not the entire content -, it's really a good book. Every line needs deep understanding in physics and math. I want to recommend this book for students and researchers who have deep and strong foundation on math and fluid mechanics. But, I don't think this book is an adequate textbook for just one sememster coursework. It's really difficult!

Excerpt: “When? When is this?” Dara asked, gesturing at the room.

“It’s June 18th, miss,” Agnes said. “You really didn’t know?”

Dara closed her eyes. “The year. What year, please?”

“It’s 1908, miss,” Agnes said.

Dara opened her eyes, opened her messenger bag, and pulled out her cell phone. She pushed the button to activate the main screen. It didn’t have a signal or the time and date. The battery was at 80 percent. She looked over at Agnes, whose eyes had gone wide. Agnes leaned over in her chair, trying to get a better look at the phone. Dara tapped a few buttons to pull up the photos she had stored on her phone. Yes, they were still there. The photos of Nick, their parents, and their friends were still there. The many pictures of Jenny, with and without Dara, were there. With Agnes still gazing at her and the phone intently, Dara went to her phone’s contacts and dialed Nick’s number. Nothing.

“That still doesn’t mean I’m not dreaming,” she muttered.

“Perhaps I should make us both some tea, miss.” Dara nodded yes, although she figured she could do with something a good deal stronger than tea. Agnes bustled out of the room.

“Oh my God,” Dara said when she was alone. Her eyes darted around the room, taking it all in, the flower-patterned curtains on the one window, the shabby wardrobe standing in the corner, the night stand, the wooden chair, a small desk, the plain iron bed frame and the bedclothes that adorned it. One part of her couldn’t believe it was true, but another part could. That part urged her to accept the truth. It will go much easier on you if you do and soon, it said.

She thought of her brother, who was probably frantic with worry wondering where she was. What would he tell their parents if he didn’t find her before they were supposed to fly out of Heathrow next week? Then there were her friends and the co-workers she actually liked. Most of all, though, there was Jenny. Jenny had been dead for over a year, so it wasn’t the fact that she wouldn’t see Jenny again that upset her. She had accepted that. No, it was the fact that she might never see the places she associated with Jenny ever again. She may never see all the little gifts Jenny had given her during their time together. In a panic, she clutched at the thin gold chain she wore around her neck. She kept her engagement ring on that chain. At least she had that. She kissed it tenderly and wept.

Engaging

The Time Slip Girl is a story of Dara, a young woman who is touring London with her brother and picking her life back up after losing her soon to be wife when she falls through time back to 1908. Agnes is a quiet woman who sticks to herself living in fear in soon after the turn of the century. Her abusive brother drops in and out of her life as he sees fit. She really has no choice in the matter if she doesn't want her closely guarded secret brought to light. On one remarkable night her life is changed forever when she finds an oddly dressed, very confused and confusing female in the basement the home she rents an apartment from. What happens to them next is not mine to tell.

This book was a good paced, well flowing, captivating book that I just could not put down. Really, I read through the night till I finished a bit after the sun rose! It was a great story even before it got to the romance and then it got better! I loved the realness of the characters, their insecurities and doubts only made them more sweet and believable. I liked how Ms. Andre took me back in time and showed me what it really would have been like, the sights and sounds and even the smells.... The hardships people experienced and the things women had to endure, the things that were commonplace then that are taken for granted today. I am so grateful to be alive now and not then!

I enjoyed Agnes' curiosities and her delight in simple things. How, even though she sometimes seems so meek she has such a strong sense of loyalty and is willing to overcome fear to do what is right and to follow her heart. I fell a bit in love with Dara. Besides being lovely, she was faced her situation head on (after freaking out a bit at first, but going back in time more than 100 years would tend to do that to a person!). She did her best to adapt to and accept the changes she found herself in. She was able to stand up to Ted and keep him from hurting her and Agnes too. She did what needed to be done and allowing herself to love Agnes made me smile and my heart grow so big!

I was thrilled with the ending, it was just right! Once again, Ms. Andre has made me a very happy reviewer!

Delightful and impressive

I loved this book. It's well-written, with great flow to it. I couldn't put it down and stayed up late to finish it. The depiction of 1908 is very realistic without going in the direction of how-did-anybody-survive-back-then that some historical novels take. I could see how it would be shocking to arrive there, but also how one could adapt and it could become home.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I've read many lesbian romances that just aren't well written, have cardboard characters or ridiculously dramatic plots. This book is very well written (with some amazingly good descriptions), the characters spring from the page and walk around in my imagination and despite the time travel the plot feels very realistic. That would have been shocking and delightful enough. But I realized at some point that the book is a subtle and nuanced meditation on the nature of love in the context of our mortality. I'm impressed.

THE TIME SLIP GIRL is a beautifully written story of discovering new love in an unconventional way. Dara Gillard is a smart, attractive, and talented woman from 2014 who is visiting London with her brother as a way of honoring her dead fianc�e, Jenny. Dara is on a tour when she falls through a time slip to 1908 Edwardian London. She meets Agnes Cartwright, who lives in the house Dara was touring in 2014, along with Mrs. Newton and her children. While Dara is trying to find her way through her new life in 1908, she’s also fighting her feelings for Agnes. However, during all this Dara is unaware Agnes feels the same way about her. The setting is very realistic, the characters are dynamic, and the emotions are rich – I was truly transported. I enjoyed the fact the sex scenes were tasteful and not overly graphic which, to me, fit the tone of the novel perfectly. THE TIME SLIP GIRL is a wonderful novel which I definitely recommend!

Read this even if you aren't a suzuki teacher

This isn't about Suzuki's pedagogy, it's about his philosophical principles, and his ideas about music education making people into better human beings ring true. It's a great reminder for any of us teaching those kids who are forced into it by their parents, that they will be fundamentally changed for the better, by experiencing the culture of learning to play an instrument. There are several truly inspirational anecdotes, such as the story of a young girl whose right side was near paralysed, and who overcame the neurological disorder and subsequently became a professional. Whether you're just starting your own studio or thinking about retirement, this book really helps to reaffirm why we teach music, why we're musicians, and just how much we can contribute to society in this role.

Inspiring, visionary method for teaching children

As a new "Suzuki" parent, I was so delighted to discover Dr. Suzuki's book and philosophy - that anything can be learned. The Suzuki method is not so much about training violin prodigies as it is about developing what he calls "noble feelings" basically character: discipline, concentration, work ethic, values etc. What more can parents want for their child?

This is not a scientific book -- it's obviously his opinion that "nurture" is more important than "nature" (i.e. talent is learned not something that you are born with) and there are some things he says that time has proven wrong (the part about the wolf-children for instance which later was revealed as a hoax.) However, I found his story and philosophy very inspiring and with many elements that made a lot of sense.

I highly recommend this book for (and his attitude) for parents (and teachers) whether their kids are taking violin lessons or not.

Suzuki inspires me

Suzuki had a big idea. My children's violin teacher recommended this book to me. Mr. Suzuki's desire to bring out the best in all children impressed me. I enjoyed reading how thoughtful he was when he was approached by the parents of a blind child and later the parents of a child who had suffered a stroke and struggled to hold onto the bow. It inspired me to think about my children's music education in a broader way.
