Pretty good basic review

The book provides a good review of available and commonly used hydroponic methods without in-depth detail for any particular approach. This is a good text for someone who's interested in hydroponics but not looking for elaborate dtail on any specific methodology. Good treatment of nutrient addition. The book meets it's objective of showing "how hydroponic systems work".

A clear, insightful springboard to understanding business.

Seeing the Big Picture teaches the reader how to assess and reason about the financial present and future of a business — to see its big picture. It teaches this by exploring a model of business health and using that model to interpret example financial statements. This sounds dry and technical. However, the model places the highest importance on organisational culture and leadership. Furthermore, story-telling and examples illustrate every concept. The author's motivating argument is that:

1. The most effective employees and leaders act in the interest of the big picture.
2. Company leadership will entrust decision making power to employees who can see the big picture.

The book is couched in plain, simple language and is perfectly organised. I wouldn’t change a thing. I also genuinely appreciated the absence of rubbish. I didn’t have to suffer the author’s ego for even a second. I could learn without friction or frustration.

The only danger is that a reader may mistake this simplicity for a lack of depth and read without thinking. The upside is that the book is so short and simple that a slow, in-depth reading is still possible in good time.

The second half on financial statements is slightly more tedious. However, the author is well aware of this and offers quick run downs (e.g. The Income Statement in a Matter of Minutes) followed by optional in-depth explorations (e.g. The Income Statement in About 30 Minutes). The second half of the book could even be left as a reference for when actually attempting to read financial statements.

All in all, the clarity, conciseness and low price add up to an incredible return on time and money spent for non-finance readers. The author suggests to continue learning about business after reading the book. I have been reading and taking courses on corporate finance. This book has provided an excellent basis for learning the principles of accounting and finance. It is the best place to start. In fact, learning from other sources just makes me appreciate this exceptionally clear book even more.

I'm a business owner and am always on the prowl for good, informational books that would help me run my business. Kevin Cope's book is a short book but packed tight with valuable information that would be useful to a business that is still in the idea stage as well as one that has been running for a while. Mr Cope touches on the critical topics that every owner should master in their businesses. If you are the head of a business or even if you want to know what the heads of business think about, do not hesitate in getting and reading this book.

A Must-Have Reference Book

I hate math. I hate company financial discussions. But I like this book. It is as if Cope is in my head, answering my unspoken questions. Just when he explains something containing a financial term I've forgotten, he inserts a simple definition of that very term. I love the practical story of Autin's Cycle Shop, too. It is told in stages, with each stage inserted into the text to illustrate the point Cope is making at the moment. Oh yes, it is written in layman's language, or I wouldn't have ever bothered reading it. This book is a must-have reference book for your desk--an illuminating and confidence-building cheat sheet for all of us non-financial folks.

Series Keeps Getting Better

Rebecca is independent and stubborn. She wants to get all her powers as a future Guardian Witch but the only way that can happen is if she has sex. Since she doesn’t want to settle down or find a mate she figures anyone can take care of the sex part, with no strings.
Leon is shocked when he inadvertently stumbles across Rebecca and some other guy in the woods his immediate thought is that she is in danger and he takes it upon himself to rescue her. Even though she didn’t need to be rescued.

What neither of them expected that night was to learn they are mates. She doesn’t want a mate. She is independent and doesn’t want to settle down, she wants to live her life how she decides. Leon is possessive and doesn’t believe she can handle what he needs.
Rebecca denies the connection and Leon leaves, angry and heartbroken. When he returns years later will they be able to move forward or will the past haunt them forever? Will they be able to trust each other again?

I love this series. There aren’t enough words to express it. The stories are so beautiful and heartwarming. And hot, the chemistry between Doris’s characters are always hot and explosive, in a good way.

Leon and Rebecca's story was an emotional story and I couldn't tear myself away from this book. Rebecca tried to trick the fates, but it didn't work. These two danced around their attraction until they were forced to talk. This is a really good series and it is such a moving series I am pulled in and I can't wait for the next book!

Trying to mess with destiny can lead to unintended consequences. Rebecca wanted her independence and not to be trapped into a relationship. She made a decision at the age of eighteen, and that cost her the love of her life. With the death of her father, she might just get another chance.

This book features the daughter of Joanne and Henry from The Witch's Protector. I was happy to visit with a familiar character and get to know her daughter, Rebecca.

Like her mom, she is destined to be a Guardian Witch and needs to find her mate to come into her powers. She is also headstrong and stubborn and wants to make her own choices. She decides to find a human as a sexual partner to avoid the bond and stay independent. It doesn't go the way she expects. Rebecca realizes after that encounter that Leon, a lion shifter and Protector, is the one for her. Unfortunately, her actions cause Leon to not want to have anything to do with her.

Leon grew up with Rebecca and was more of a big brother than anything else. It is only when they meet again after years apart that they realize their feelings have changed. Leon is so hurt by Rebecca that he changes and is just interested in appeasing his sexual appetites. Like her father, he is into a BDSM lifestyle. I felt Leon was too judgmental and unforgiving. Rebecca was young and made a bad decision but if he really loved her so much I would have thought he would have fought harder to make it work. I didn't feel their connection as much as I did that of her parents in the earlier book. I really wanted to love them together but felt Leon was too interested in being in control and not enough focused on loving and supporting Rebecca.

Rebecca represents the best qualities of her parents and I was pleased to have the opportunity to see her grow into her potential. I am not a big fan of BDSM but it was more mild in this book than in some. For me, it was more Leo's desire to dominate and control outside the bedroom that distanced me from the story. He is so rigid in his beliefs that he doesn't know how to compromise. Neverthelesss, I enjoyed the story and would be interested in reading more books in the series.

Don't be fooled by the slender spine of this unusual book. Rollins, the Irish philosopher/po-mo theologian who has previously published How (Not) to Speak of God and The Fidelity of Betrayal, upends some of Christians' most cherished platitudes about God in his newest outing. He cautions readers that the book is not to be read quickly, for acquiring information, but to be savored slowly for possible transformation. Mostly, the book lives up to this billing. Rollins recasts some of the most familiar parables of and stories about Jesus, sometimes subversively—as when he proposes a version of feeding the 5,000 that shows Jesus and his disciples pigging out on meager resources while the multitudes look on, starving. His point? That Christians are the body of Christ, and when we oppress the poor and hoard scarce resources, we are saying that represents the kind of God we serve. Although not all of the parables work equally well—some could use further illumination—Rollins is a tremendously talented writer and thinker whose challenges to Christianity-as-usual should be well-received by the emergent church crowd, if not beyond. Parables for the Present Day

According to a recent article about heart/brain communication, research shows that fibers in the nervous system are 90% dedicated to sending messages to the brain and only 10% going out from the brain. "Neurally speaking," states Rollin McCraty, PhD, "the heart sends far more information to the brain than the brain sends to the heart." If that is the case I need to read more books that connect straight with my heart, not just ones that simply stimulate my thinking. Peter Rollins new book, "The Orthodox Heretic: And Other Impossible Tales" does just that.

In 33 short chapters Rollins weaves tales designed to bathe readers in the possibilities of faith, love, freedom and forgiveness. And in the same way that Jesus told parables to shock his listeners; Rollins uses this literary technique to poke his readers. I ended several of the sections with a laugh, a chill, or an audible gasp as a point was driven home.

He follows each tale with some of his own processing that went into the story as a jumping off place for reflection. This is helpful in understanding Rollins thoughts, but the processing doesn't end with reading the book. These tales stick with you. Several times I found myself grabbing a friend or family member and saying, "Sit down, you have to listen to this story!" as I read aloud to them and entered into meaningful conversations. This book will serve as an excellent resource for discussion groups as they engage with these narratives.

Most Creative Christian Release of the Year

Who else is doing this stuff? Peter Rollins expands some ideas from his other books to create over 30 original parables that will make you think harder about tenants of your faith you may take for granted. This book is a beautiful work of art as well as a finely crafted device for helping communicate transcend truth where normal language sometimes breaks down. As Jesus realized, some things can only be communicated via story, our modern systematic theologies often fail to articulate the most profound aspects of the way of Jesus. Rollins commentaries are also very helpful, though I would recommend reflecting on each story yourself before moving on to Rollins explanations, surely Rollins would welcome his work speaking to different people in different ways. Part of the beauty of parables is there is usually an ambiguity that makes the medium of the parable or short story all the more valuable. In my opinion, this is the most thought provoking book I have come across in quite a long time, and is a great intro to Rollins' (timely) thinking.

It's so good that you need to keep putting it down.

Orthodox Heretic might not be Pete Rollins' most challenging book, but it is surely his most powerful. Having shown his academic chops in his previous two books, Pete shifts gears to show us some true subversion, along with the depth and breadth of his hermeneutic.

This is a collection of parables, each of which acted like a tiny explosive device as they detonated slowly and successively, crumbling my understanding of the world and of Christianity, and showing me something much more beautiful, messy, powerless, and true. Here, Pete displays creative and courageous exegetical skill, his radical interpretation of the essense of Jesus' teachings and practice, and his deep understanding of human nature. What he leaves us with is a kind of Christianity that supercedes belief: a life of love and sacrifice and fidelity.

So on second thought, perhaps it is Pete's most challenging book: not challenging to understand, but extremely challenging to live (and I'm sure it was quite challenging to write). Because in it, Pete challenges our very confidence in our ideas of God, pointing us away from the heresy of orthodoxy, and toward orthodox heresy.

About the Author
ELINE SNEL is a therapist and certified MBSR trainer and runs the Academy for Mindful Teaching in the Netherlands. Her program has been used in numerous primary schools in the Netherlands. She has recently started a pilot project in various secondary schools to teach mindfulness practices to teenagers. Wonderful book for parents to help children deal with anxiety, frustration or other issues!

This book was written to help parents with simple exercises that will teach their children a way to clear anxiety and just overthinking. But I loved the idea and bought it for myself. It comes with a CD that nicely guides you through each exercise. The writing is a discussion/explanation for parents, it is not written for children.

Mindfulness or awareness of the present is something I never learned as a child, but how incredibly useful to understand that you can change the way emotional responses control us just through awareness. While it is very individual, techniques of mindfulness can be so helpful and even have long term benefits on health.

Great little read

I am loving this book so far. I work with children who have severe emotional and behavioral issues, as well as ADHD. I have been using mindfulness exercises all school year and have noticed a great change with the kids. Sitting Still Like A Frog has been a great addition to my reading. The CD included is great as well. We have only listened to a couple of tracks, but the kids enjoy it. The CD is useful for both adults and kids, however the language fits well with the students, it is something they can relate to. This is just one of the practices I use to work with my students, but this book is a great compliment to my practice.

Amazing. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.

This is my first review for a product I have purchased on Amazon. I feel so strongly about it that I felt the need to write and encourage other parents to try it.

We have been using this CD daily for over 3 months. It has created an almost miraculous change in helping my severely anxious child learn to calm himself down. This book has literally changed my child's life. I feel like a proselytizer when I tell people about it, but I feel strongly enough about it that I don't even care. ;)

I have a young elementary-aged child with anxiety so extreme that in the past, it was interfering with him falling asleep at night. We would do the whole bedtime-routine, I would turn out the light and leave the room and then he would spend up to 3 hours walking in circles in his bedroom until he fell over from exhaustion. He simply did not know to "turn off his brain" so that he could sleep. We tried many different things to help him calm down: hot baths, massages, reading books until he fell asleep, etc. None of them really worked. Recently his therapist recommended that we try some "mindfulness" training. I had the vague idea that mindfulness meant focusing on gratitude, taking some deep breaths, etc., but I had no idea how to teach that skill to a child. I started looking on Amazon for books on mindfulness and stumbled upon this Book/CD set. I ordered it, along with some of the Indigo Dreams CDs and crossed my fingers that something might help.

When the book and CD arrived, I skimmed the book and was totally unimpressed. I didn't even bother to finish reading it, because it came across as dry and boring. But the CD...that's another thing. The CD has 11 meditations on it that cover a variety of situations, from general anxiety to sadness to not being able to fall asleep. And they are amazing. They tap into a kid's deepest thoughts and insecurities and needs in ways that kids can't even verbalize. They are...magic. For the past three months, my kid has been falling asleep on average within 10 minutes of turning on the CD player. There was ONE night that meditation didn't work, and that was because he was too worked up to use it.

The CD starts with a 9 minute introduction that teaches kids how to meditate. (They don't realize that's what is happening. They think they are just learning to "sit like a frog.") After listening to that several times, my child had a very clear idea of how the meditative process worked and how it made him feel. He wanted more, because the feeling was so good. Over several days, we worked our way through all the meditations. Now he cues up the tracks he thinks he needs based upon what he is feeling. "The Conveyor Belt of Worries," "Sitting Like a Frog," "The Secret of the Heart Chamber," and "Sleep Tight" are our favorites. We listen to at least one every day. And the cumulative affect has been much greater than just helping with bedtime. It has helped my child to be calmer all throughout the day.

In researching the affects of meditation on the brain, I discovered that there are studies showing through the use of MRIs that mediation can actually shrink the fear-portion of your brain and strengthen the higher-reasoning portions. This affect is cumulative; the more you meditate, the greater and longer-lasting the benefit.

I have recommended this CD to anyone and everyone I know who has small children. The life lesson of learning to be calm and recognize that "thoughts are just thoughts and they don't KNOW everything" sends an incredibly powerful message that I think benefits all children. I even gave our copy to my child's teacher so she could use it in the classroom, because she said that all the kids are struggling to maintain calm as we get toward the end of the year. Now I'll be purchasing a new copy for home, because we can't be without it. :)
