In O'Connor's (The Twilight of the Day, 2001, etc.) thriller, a retired FBI agent foils a Vatican takeover with roots in a WWII maneuver orchestrated by Ian Fleming and Winston Churchill.�Retired agent Justin Scott--introduced in The Seventh Seal (2005)--arrives at an airport in Rome during a strange terrorist shootout. One of these mysterious figures muses to herself: "Szuros, you always insisted Winston Churchill had done something long ago which would one day compel Moscow to declare war on the Holy See, yet we all chose to dismiss that warning. What happened here moments ago proves you were right all along, and now the world is about to reap a terrible whirlwind." The novel then shifts to London in 1940. Lt. Cmdr. Ian Fleming suggests to Winston Churchill that they forge a letter from Sister Lucia, the Virgin of Fatima, who, in real life, claims to have had visions of the Virgin Mary as a child; her "letter" will be used to convince Hitler to invade Russia instead of England. Dr. Margaret Smalling is dispatched with newly invented penicillin to cure the ailing virgin and bring back handwriting samples. Cutback to Scott, a retired FBI agent who has done previous work for clergy. He's being briefed by Cardinal Kettering, to whom Scott's longtime friend Monsignor Jack O'Bryan reports, about some puzzling messages from Russia. Soon, various religious leaders are being killed or abducted, and the pope calls for an emergency meeting of cardinals in Rome.Scott is also made privy to the last letter of Fatima,which hints at the world's end or at least the church's toppling by Russian forces. As Scott tracks down various antagonists, a possible nuclear bomb threat hovers over the convening clergy. Author O'Connor, a retired USAF colonel, has written a nifty if overly ambitious thriller that brings up a surfeit of interesting threads--Dr. Smalling's mission, the conspiratorial survival of the grand duchess of Russia, etc.--that don't have ample time to fully develop. Still, O'Connor holds reader interest with his breakneck plot and some particularly charming characterizations, especially in the banter between Scott and O'Bryan. Stunning story telling anchored in history and fraught with suspense. review by r. vair

A masterpiece of story telling! Mr. O'Connor intertwines fact and fiction, past and present as if he were Merlin himself. The tension of modern powers and spycraft are intermingled in the web of past and present political machinery. Merchinery that pits spy against spy, country against country, the past against the present, the State against the Church and opposing events so strange they could provoke the Day of God's Wrath.
Elements anchored in the Russian Revolution, World War II and real, documented miraculous visions converge to bring the world and the Church to the brink of the Apocalypse.
More suspense than Brown's Da Vinci Code, Silva's Confessor or Fleming's Moonraker, the Barbarossa Covenant's tension builds...and builds until it is unbearable. You cannot turn the pages fast enough.
The more familiarity the reader has with modern world history, the deeper the satisfaction. But even a novice will be enthralled in this masterful tale of crosses, double crosses and trupple crosses that bring the entire world to the brink of an apocalypse too horrifying to imagine. A great, great read!

Wow! This is my first reading about Justin Scott. It will not be the last! This book offered intrigue and mystery into the intricate nature of The Church and the weaving of a web during World War II that stretched beyond the secret events. I loved the manipulation of the written word to fit the purpose of one family's dream!

Just finished reading The Barborosa Covenant. It was another great Justin Scott thriller which kept this reader on the edge of her seat!!! Loved the characters and the historical facts-- The ending was intense!! Read the book in two sittings---could not put it down...Looking forward to more from Ian A. O'connor.

A great productivity skill to train

I always thought that speed reading would mean scan reading and just the main message but none of the details. The author actually shows how to read much faster and not loose in quality through some very useful exercises.

I love reading in my free time and I also have to read a lot for work in English, which is not my native language. Therefore I was really interested to try out this method. After just a week practice my rate has increased from 300 to almost 600 EWPM (efficient word per minute). Again that's for reading in a foreign language. It's just amazing.

The finger right pointing helped me a lot as well as to eliminate the voice in my head when I read.

I read a lot of books each year, but am always struggling with wanting to read faster AND increase comprehension. The two seem to be mutually exclusive at times. However, I found many of the tips and exercises provided in this handy guide to be very helpful. Of course, learning this skill is an individual process and no one method works for every person so you’ll have to judge for yourself which works best for you. For me, double-pointing and keywords seems to be key to my speed and comprehension. Used in combination, I have already increased my rate by about 25% so far based on the included assessment in the appendix.

Great Tools and Techniques

Great book to learn about speed reading and tools to help you do it. I love that it has assessments to help you determine where you are at for your reading speed and then gives tips on how to increase reading speed, I was shocked at how many of the questions in the assessment that I didnt know the answer to, I guess part of my issue is controlling distractions while I am reading.

Pleasantly surprised

All I can say is wow.. Well no, I actually have more to say! When I first started reading I was like 'uh huh yeah, ok another book that gives advice but doesn't REALLY give direction' because some of the stuff I was already doing, but as I kept reading I was really shocked as she began pulling back those layers! Things REALLY hit home for me, especially when she was talking about that feeling of being 'stuck' and then actually offered some REAL advice on how to get 'unstuck'! My words really can't express how great I thought this book was as it all came together and gave that feeling of 'hope' and 'it's possible for me too'!! LOVED IT!!

I really enjoyed reading Maryann's new book. It helped me through those days where I ask myself "am I really here?" and "I wish I can go back in time to keep this from happening to me". This book is a great pick me up with many great suggestions on how to move your life in a positive direction. Life is really what you make it and this book serves as a really great guide for when we hit a roadblock in life and don't know where to turn. Whether your feeling down or happier than ever in life, it is always nice to explore new and unique ways to enhance your mood, situation and self esteem.

This is a great guide to empowering yourself, physically and mentally. There's some useful strategies that will help you take control of your current circumstances, deal with your emotions, improve your relationships, adapt to any environment, and much more. By following these strategies, you can take charge of your life and transform it to something meaningful. Will wake up the sleeping heart

This relatively short treatise of Imam 'Alawi al-Haddad is a piercing reminder of where we are and where we are going. This book is both enlightening and terrifying (in a good way). The Shaykh guides us from the time before our conception all the way to our endpoint in the fire or the garden and reminds us of what is important in each phase of our life and what our responsibilities are.

This book is not indepth in its topics, but that is not its point. If you want to study every hadith about the judgment day for example then you can do that somewhere else. A brief outline is given of every stage, both the seen and the unseen, to give a basic view of what has and is going to occur, but the focus is on the spiritual and what we can do to change our state.

If you have a heart that is not dead this book will have a positive effect on you.

Know where you came from and where you're going

Imam Al-Haddad's concise book on different stages of man is quiet remarkable. He divides lives of man into 5 stages. 1st stage being the realm of souls (alam'e Amr) where Allah created souls of all the human beings and took covenant from them. Second stage is the present life on Earth after expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Paradise. This is the most cruicial stage, coming bliss or torment will be a direct result of deeds and conduct of this present life. Third stage is the intermediate realm of 'Barzakh' immediately after our death. This is where we'll taste what's about to come on the final day of judgement. Imam mentions that this stage is more closer to our final state in Paradise or Hell Fire (may Allah save us from it). Fourth stage begins from the day of resurrection till our deeds are judged and a final verdict is issued by Almighty as to where we're destined to go. Fifth and the final stage is the everlasting state of bliss in Paradise for the faithful and the righteous or the everlasting state of torment, agony and remorse for the sinners, rebels and transgessors.

Book contains some amazing descriptions of the Paradise and the Hell Fire.

About the Author
Historian and award-winning author Don Nardo has written many books for young people about modern history, including studies of the rise of Hitler and Nazism, World War II, international terrorism, and dozens of military topics. In addition, he specializes in ancient history and has published numerous volumes about the histories and cultures of the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and peoples of Mesopotamia. Nardo, who also composes and arranges orchestral music, lives with his wife, Christine, in Massachusetts.

Don Nardo's LIFE IN A NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP is a factual account of life - and mostly death - in the various camps run by the Nazi regime. While it makes for horrifying reading, it is what happened long ago in Nazi Germany. And it is a useful introduction to the subject for younger readers, 6th grade and up.

After an introductory chapter on the rise of Nazism, Hitler's accession to power and the creation of the camps, Nardo relates camp life in chapters on 'Deportation and Arrival,' 'Housing, Food and Other Living Conditions,' 'Forced Labor and Other Inmate Exploitation,' 'Lurking Threats of Punishment and Death' and 'The Miracles of Survival and Liberation.' Nardo supplements his narrative by first-person reminiscences by camp survivors, which make for the most heart-wrenching reading.

The text is illustrated with vintage and contemporary b&w and color photographs and maps. Some of the images may be disconcerting to the intended audience...yet they record reality.

Strong suspense and shocking secrets!

This book contains characters from the Gone series. Enter a tangled web, and find a new take on Lydia. She is married to Dean and her life isn't all that she wants it to be. Her friends are as supportive as they are able to be, but there are far deeper issues working their way to the surface. This book has a wonderful amount of suspense as the story unfolds and we learn a lot more about what happened between Lydia and Chad from another view point. At the same time many other lives are impacted as new things unfold in the same neighborhood where Gone started. I am so glad I didn't miss this book. It is a very strong follow up to the Gone Trilogy and I hope we have more in this series!

Another great read!

This is another great story by Stacy Claflin. I will admit I was surprised she was writing a story about Lydia. When I read the Gone series I did not like her character and doubted if I wanted to hear the "other woman's" story. However, I'd never been disappointed by Stacy before, and that holds true after this novel as well. I like how she builds up the suspense and even though you may not agree with the actions of the characters, they are not so far fetched you shake your head and think "no way!" The characters are real and relatable and the story is entertaining and a page turner. I read this in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend this and her other novels!

You do not have to read the Gone series to enjoy Dean’s List

Have you ever read a series then thought about what had happen with the other characters in the book? The friends of the main characters, the people who were supportive of the other characters, or the ones that seemed sneaky. Dean’s List is the follow up to the Gone series by Stacy Claflin. You do not have to read the Gone series to enjoy Dean’s List, but of course more of the book will make sense and the characters will be more familiar.

Dean and Lydia’s marriage is on the rocks; actually they don’t even have a real marriage. I cannot imagine living Lydia’s life, even her life before she found those news clippings. Being scared of your husband, having to be the perfect wife, having the perfect house, it would be a nightmare.
Even worse is the fear of leaving your husband and the fact that he would never let you leave. Lydia was someone I wanted to help. I wanted to go to her, take her away, save her from the life she was living. Then she found the clippings, it made her life even worse. She had to keep her life a secret, pretend that all was well. It had to be one of the toughest positions for a woman to be in.

This entire series of books is not easy. There are a lot of extremely tough subjects covered in their pages. Stacy Claflin is amazing. She handles the stories with care, grace, and white gloves. There is no candy coating the stories and characters, she lays it out there, telling it how it really is. These are stories that will stay with you, characters that you will not forget. I certainly recommend checking out this entire series, or start with Dean’s List and go from there.
