About the Author

John McPhee was born in Princeton, New Jersey, and was educated at Princeton University and Cambridge University. His writing career began at Time magazine and led to his long association with The New Yorker, where he has been a staff writer since 1965. Also in 1965, he published his first book, A Sense of Where You Are, with Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and in the years since, he has written nearly 30 books, including Oranges (1967), Coming into the Country (1977), The Control of Nature (1989), The Founding Fish (2002), Uncommon Carriers (2007), and Silk Parachute (2011). Encounters with the Archdruid (1972) and The Curve of Binding Energy (1974) were nominated for National Book Awards in the category of science. McPhee received the Award in Literature from the Academy of Arts and Letters in 1977. In 1999, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Annals of the Former World. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

The always excellent McPhee gives us a collection of short pieces on a wide variety of subjects, including the monsters and whisky and Macbeths of Scotland, playing basketball and tennis in England, racing horses, paddling canoes, and several more.
My favorite is "The Search for Marvin Gardens," an examination of the famous game Monopoly from two perspectives. As McPhee plays several games of Monopoly with an unnamed partner--they take no more than 20 minutes for these masters--he takes us on a tour of Atlantic City. Names of avenues like Vermont and Ventnor, Illinois and Indiana, Pacific and Park Place are given form by McPhee's fine prose.
Fans of "The Crofter and the Laird," McPhee's description of his months on a Scottish island, will appreciate three pieces in this collection: "Josie's Well," about the wonderful small whisky distilleries of Scotland (written in 1970, well before the recent fad for single-malt scotches); "From Birnam Wood to Dunsinane," his quest for the locations in Shakespeare's "Macbeth"; and the title piece, in which we are treated to the serious folk who are investigating the Loch Ness Monster.
An enjoyable book from start to finish, there is truly something for everyone here.

A sampler from a master essayist

This is the book that introduced me to John McPhee's work. I fell in love with his writing from the first essay and have not been disappointed since. When I was handed this book, I looked at the table of contents and thought to myself, "There's not a topic in here that I'm interested in." However, I trusted the friend who'd given it to me, so I started reading . . . and discovered a writer who seems capable of making anything interesting.

I've since read a great many other of McPhee's books, and all of them enchant me. He has the ability to discover what makes a topic interesting to those people who love it, and to bring it to readers in a way that they can discover and share the afficionado's pleasure; and he has a way with language that is delightful, at times lyrical.

"Pieces of the Frame" is a great place to start a journey that will broaden your horizons painlessly and entertainingly.

Book length or magazine length, no one does it better than John McPhee.

John McPhee is one of the very best non-fiction writers of the past century, and has the rare ability to find what is most interesting and compelling in even the most mundane subjects. Is there anyone else who could write an entire book about oranges that is a true page-turner?

Instead of digging in deeply to one subject, Pieces of the Frame offers shorter glimpses at several different subjects. Even working with a more constrained length, McPhee finds the most compelling angles of each subject, and the limitations actually benefit him at times, forcing him to focus on what is truly essential.

Not every piece is a winner - even the best ballplayers strike out - but McPhee's batting average is higher than just about anyone else's. Even the less successful pieces are enjoyable reads, and the best are masterpieces of long form journalism.

In an age of fewer and fewer outlets for high-quality long form journalism, "Pieces of the Frame" gives readers a taste of what a true master of the form can do.

Browsing through the reviews and comments about Maus, I saw that there was some question as to whether the hardcover edition comprised Parts I and II. This is understandable because the product is listed in Amazon as "The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1)," which seems contradictory.

When I was considering purchasing it, I looked at the number of pages that were listed for the edition and guessed that it included both parts of the story. So I bought it, it arrived fine, and I am now writing to confirm that yes, this edition includes I and II.

Amazon should look into this and remove the "(No 1)" from the listing's title.

More subtle than can be understood in a single reading

These books are an easy and fast read, but by no means are they simple. In two slim comic books, Art Spiegelman chronicles his parents' movement from comfortable homes in Poland to the death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau, and from there to a surreally banal afterlife in upstate New York. We watch the destruction of the Holocaust continue in Spiegelman's father's transformation from a bright, good-looking youth to a miserly neurotic, his mother's deterioration from a sensitive, sweet girl into a suicide, and in the author's own unhappy interactions with his parents.
I have read some of the most negative reviews of these books, and I respectfully disagree. Some negative reviews ("Spiegelman is a jerk") castigate Spiegelman for his shamefully self-interested milking of his father's life and the Holocaust. Other negative reviews find fault with the unoriginality of the story, or discover historical inaccuracies, self-contradictions, or simplifications in the tale. Finally, a set of reviews are upset with Spiegelman's coding of people of different nationalities as animals(especially the Poles, who were also victimized by the Nazis but are depicted as pigs in the comics.)
The first criticism is both deserved and unfair. Deserved, because Spiegelman profits by the pain and death of millions, including his own family. Unfair, because Spiegelman himself consciously provides the basis for our criticism that he mocked and neglected his elderly father at the same time that he fed his own success upon his father's tales. The two volumes echo with his regret and unexpiable guilt at his treatment of his parents, and at his own success and survival. To attack Spiegelman for these things is like scolding a man in the midst of his self-immolation.
The second type of criticism finds _Maus_ to be sophomoric, inaccurate, or repetitive of other Holocaust survivor's experiences. The defense here is that Maus is the story of a single family, seen through the eyes of a single man (Vladek Spiegelman), and filtered again through his son. It is almost certain that the elderly Vladek forgot, exaggerated, or hid details, just as it is certain that his son summarized and misunderstood. However, the quasi-fictionalized format of the comic book throws this subjectivity into relief. The destroyed diaries of Spiegelman's mother are a reminder of the millions of life stories left untold, including stories perhaps too horrible and shameful for the survivors to reveal. _Maus_ does not claim to be an objective, authoritative history of the Holocaust, and in fact tries to emphasize its own limitations.
While other works may better convey the Jewish experience in the Holocaust, the innovative format of _Maus_ justifies its existence, as it allows the story to reach a greater audience.
Finally, many have objected to the negative stereotyping of the many peoples appearing in the book, especially the Poles. Spiegelman draws the Jews as innocent mice, but the Germans as bloodthirsty cats, and the Poles as selfish pigs. More amusingly (because they appear infrequently in the story) the French are drawn as frogs, the Swedes as reindeer, and the British as cold fish. The Americans are dogs, mainly friendly bow-wow dogs but also sometimes cold-eyed predators capable of pouncing on a mouse or rat. I believe that the wrongness of stereotypes was a major reason why Spiegelman used them. The Nazis are recorded as having called the Jews "vermin" and the Poles "pigs". Whether they had the qualities of these animals or not, they were treated as such... and such they were forced to become despite themselves. The Jews had to hide, hoard, and deceive; the Poles were compelled to act out of self-interest just to survive.
In other words, I think that Spiegelman's stereotypes were a deliberate choice. The WHOLE POINT of _Maus_ is how the dehumanization of the Holocaust twisted people beyond their capacities... how the camps tried to make people as ugly and despicable as their worst racial stereotypes, by making them all alike in their fear. Sometimes they succeeded.
Neither Poles nor Germans are depicted as only selfish, cowardly, and cruel in _Maus_. In fact, there are many Polish in Spiegelman's books who are shown as fellow-sufferers, or kind despite the risks to their own lives, just as there were Jews who betrayed their own. Look closely at the drawings-- I open Maus II to a random page, and see both pigs and mice in the prison suits, both as capos and victims. Who is the kind priest who renews Vladek's hope on page 28? A Pole! Even the Germans are seen to suffer from the war, caught by powers beyond their control. Meanwhile, Vladek himself is shown to be an inflexible racist (II, p. 98).

I argue, therefore, that the above criticisms of _Maus_ show a hasty reading of the books and poor comprehension of how an artist(even of non-fiction) chooses to convey a theme.
As a non-European, I have no personal investment in Jewish, German, or Polish points of view. However, as a second-generation American and child of war survivors [a civil war, so we are both victims and oppressors], I have a chord that resonates with the story of the Spiegelmans. I just re-read "Maus II" this afternoon and found to my amazement that it was still able to draw tears. In fact, when I first read the Maus books ten years ago I don't recall them affecting me so deeply... but I was younger then and had only an intellectual understanding of many things, such as love, fear, guilt, death, and weakness.
I wholeheartedly recommend these books to those who are willing to read them more than once. If you are not moved by them now, perhaps later you will be. Meanwhile, let's do our best to stop such suffering around the world.

"Maus": an important literary landmark

Art Spiegelman's "Maus: A Survivor's Tale" is a unique and unforgettable work of literature. This two-volume set of book-length comics (or "graphic novels," if you prefer) tells the story of the narrator, Artie, and his father Vladek, a Holocaust survivor. "Maus" is thus an important example of both Holocaust literature and of the graphic novel. The two volumes of "Maus" are subtitled "My Father Bleeds History" and "And Here My Troubles Began"; they should be read together to get the biggest impact.
Artie is a comic book artist who is trying to create art that is meaningful, not just commercial. As the two volumes of "Maus" unfold, he gradually learns the full story of his father's history as a Jewish survivor of the World War II Holocaust. There is a complex "book within the book" motif, since the main character is actually writing the book that we are reading. This self-referentiality also allows Spiegelman to get in some satiric material.
The distinguishing conceit of "Maus" involves depicting the books' humanoid characters as having animal heads. All the Jews have mice heads, the Germans are cats, the Americans dogs, etc. It is a visually provocative device, although not without problematic aspects. To his credit, Spiegelman addresses some of the ambiguities of this visual device in the course of the 2 volumes. For example, Artie's wife, a Frenchwoman who converted to Judaism, wonders what kind of animal head she should have in the comic.
"Maus" contains some stunning visual touches, as well as some truly painful and thought-provoking dialogue. Vladek is one of the most extraordinary characters in 20th century literature. As grim as the two books' subject matter is, there are some moments of humor and warmth. Overall, "Maus" is a profound reflection on family ties, history, memory, and the role of the artist in society.

This book is full of junk and garbage and very disorganized in the way its content is ...

Didn't read the reviews and I should have. This book is full of junk and garbage and very disorganized in the way its content is displayed. I cannot believe this guy survived in the outdoors except by luck because his information is just messed up. His pack weight must be at least 40-50 lbs with the stuff he carried or he was just a car or maybe a horse and carriage (by the stuff he mentions to use) camper. Lesson learned.

Utterly Disappointed

I was excited about this book as I received it in a monthly subscription box. Unfortunately, I was completely disappointed in this book. Another reviewer claimed that this book is heavy in plagiarism, and while I haven't researched enough to confirm, I will say that it would not surprise me. This book is a terribly cobbled together mess of works, some of which are decent, but most of which are mediocre at best and very dated. Even the good information is completely unorganized. Pass on this and buy a few higher rated books with newer information.

Since much of this development hinged on quantum physics that emerged during this time, a detailed introduction to the relevant physics is included in the book. Part II is a summary of the life history of stars. This discussion is divided into three parts: low-mass stars, like our Sun, intermediate-mass stars, and massive stars. Many of the concepts of contemporary astrophysics were built on the foundation erected by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar in the 1930s. This book, written during his birth centenary, includes a brief biographical sketch of the brilliant scientist, which readers will find fascinating.

About the Author
Dr. G. Srinivasan began his career as a solid state physicist and later switched to astrophysics. After his PhD at the University of Chicago, he worked at the IBM Research Laboratory, Zurich, Switzerland, Chalmers University of Technology, Goteborg, Sweden,�Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge and Raman Research Institute, Bangalore. He is a Past President of the Astronomical Society of India as well as the Division of Space and High Energy Astrophysics of the International Astronomical Union. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and a former Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow.

Very clear, enthusiastic, comprehensive

I found this to be a nice intermediate level treatment. There was enough astro and math rigour for someone pretty well acquainted with the relevant theory, but also easy enough for an interested layman to get a grasp of the material. I am looking forward to the third book, especially his treatment of neutron stars.

Adventures in the Human Psyche

I am not a psychologist. I am a curious reader who wanted to know more about Jung's psychology. I had not read any of Jung's work before, and now, having read the book, I feel I have a good grasp of Jung's major concepts.
Joseph Campbell edits this volume and writes a nice introduction, explaining briefly Jung's major achievements. At the end, he's included an outline of Jung's complete works, which catalogs the amazing fecundity of Jung's mind. I was hoping that Campbell, hero of mythology that he is, would have included some of Jung's mythological work in this book, like a clip from "Symbols of Transformation," but he didn't. What a pity.
After Campbell's intro, the book consists of three parts: one focusing on Jung's theory, one on Jung's application of his theory, and the third part contains some curiosities that demonstrate the range of Jung's thinking.
(Part I) Introduces Jung's Big Ideas. The collective unconscious; archetypes; the psychological types (introversion/extroversion and all that jazz). Most of this section is easy and stimulating to get through, until you hit the psychological types, which get very technical. If you think about how the types apply in real life to people you know, it makes plowing through Jung's dry descriptions a little easier.
(Part II) Jung in action. Campbell gives us a healthy serving of Jung's dream analyses, which I recommend skimming, unless you're really into alchemical symbology. The two essays on contemporary life are still fresh.
(Part III) The essay on synchronicity is a mind-bending read, and it makes you suddenly aware of all those little coincidences in life. "An Answer to Job" starts off as a playful, almost Nietzschean essay where Jung performs a psychological deconstruction on the god of the Old Testament. Then it degenerates into a discussion of the psychological development of the idea of god as traced through the Bible, which turns out to be not exciting as it sounds.
Even if Jung occasionally crosses the boundary of credibility, you get the sense that he's a true scholar, dedicated first and foremost to seeking the truth. This volume is a good peep into the mind of one of the twentieth century's most daring thinkers exploring the uncharted depths of the human psyche.
Another good intro to Jung that's easier to get through is "Man and his Symbols."

True classic, must have

Classic blues from a record that spawned thousands of blues rock guitarists copying Clapton's licks. Count me in as one of them. A real classic. Love it.

Great book/CD combination

This opinion is from someone who only recently got back into playing after twenty years away.

I think this is an excellent book and CD combination.

The backing tracks are good quality.

I can only comment on the score/tab for "Hideaway" and "Steppin' Out". Both are very close to the original and the transcriber marked down notes I couldn't hear at full speed.

I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a go at early Clapton solos.

In order to get the best out of the book, I would also recommend getting some software/hardware to slow down the original track and play along with it.
