About the Author
Historian and award-winning author Don Nardo has written many books for young people about modern history, including studies of the rise of Hitler and Nazism, World War II, international terrorism, and dozens of military topics. In addition, he specializes in ancient history and has published numerous volumes about the histories and cultures of the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and peoples of Mesopotamia. Nardo, who also composes and arranges orchestral music, lives with his wife, Christine, in Massachusetts.

Don Nardo's LIFE IN A NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP is a factual account of life - and mostly death - in the various camps run by the Nazi regime. While it makes for horrifying reading, it is what happened long ago in Nazi Germany. And it is a useful introduction to the subject for younger readers, 6th grade and up.

After an introductory chapter on the rise of Nazism, Hitler's accession to power and the creation of the camps, Nardo relates camp life in chapters on 'Deportation and Arrival,' 'Housing, Food and Other Living Conditions,' 'Forced Labor and Other Inmate Exploitation,' 'Lurking Threats of Punishment and Death' and 'The Miracles of Survival and Liberation.' Nardo supplements his narrative by first-person reminiscences by camp survivors, which make for the most heart-wrenching reading.

The text is illustrated with vintage and contemporary b&w and color photographs and maps. Some of the images may be disconcerting to the intended audience...yet they record reality.

Strong suspense and shocking secrets!

This book contains characters from the Gone series. Enter a tangled web, and find a new take on Lydia. She is married to Dean and her life isn't all that she wants it to be. Her friends are as supportive as they are able to be, but there are far deeper issues working their way to the surface. This book has a wonderful amount of suspense as the story unfolds and we learn a lot more about what happened between Lydia and Chad from another view point. At the same time many other lives are impacted as new things unfold in the same neighborhood where Gone started. I am so glad I didn't miss this book. It is a very strong follow up to the Gone Trilogy and I hope we have more in this series!

Another great read!

This is another great story by Stacy Claflin. I will admit I was surprised she was writing a story about Lydia. When I read the Gone series I did not like her character and doubted if I wanted to hear the "other woman's" story. However, I'd never been disappointed by Stacy before, and that holds true after this novel as well. I like how she builds up the suspense and even though you may not agree with the actions of the characters, they are not so far fetched you shake your head and think "no way!" The characters are real and relatable and the story is entertaining and a page turner. I read this in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend this and her other novels!

You do not have to read the Gone series to enjoy Dean’s List

Have you ever read a series then thought about what had happen with the other characters in the book? The friends of the main characters, the people who were supportive of the other characters, or the ones that seemed sneaky. Dean’s List is the follow up to the Gone series by Stacy Claflin. You do not have to read the Gone series to enjoy Dean’s List, but of course more of the book will make sense and the characters will be more familiar.

Dean and Lydia’s marriage is on the rocks; actually they don’t even have a real marriage. I cannot imagine living Lydia’s life, even her life before she found those news clippings. Being scared of your husband, having to be the perfect wife, having the perfect house, it would be a nightmare.
Even worse is the fear of leaving your husband and the fact that he would never let you leave. Lydia was someone I wanted to help. I wanted to go to her, take her away, save her from the life she was living. Then she found the clippings, it made her life even worse. She had to keep her life a secret, pretend that all was well. It had to be one of the toughest positions for a woman to be in.

This entire series of books is not easy. There are a lot of extremely tough subjects covered in their pages. Stacy Claflin is amazing. She handles the stories with care, grace, and white gloves. There is no candy coating the stories and characters, she lays it out there, telling it how it really is. These are stories that will stay with you, characters that you will not forget. I certainly recommend checking out this entire series, or start with Dean’s List and go from there.
