Good textbook for teachers seeking ways to improve students' vocabulary

Because many words in English have syllables based on Latin and Greek roots, knowledge of Latin and Greek bases, prefixes, and suffixes can help a person to better learn and understand the meaning of many additional words. This textbook aims at providing English teachers with background knowledge about the Latin and Greek roots of syllables in many English words and practical suggestions for using that knowledge to better teach English vocabulary.
The authors: (1) discuss research about teaching vocabulary; (2) provide a brief history of the English language and how it has been influenced by various languages as it developed into modern English; (3) explain basic Latin and Greek roots (including bases, prefixes, and suffixes) and how knowledge of them is important to teaching vocabulary; (4) suggest how to plan and design vocabulary instruction; (5) describe different activities and methods that teachers can use to promote vocabulary learning; and (6) identify and address several problems that teachers might face when teaching Greek and Latin roots to help build their students' vocabulary.
This book could be used by teachers seeking to help build vocabulary for students whose first language is English, as well as teachers seeking to help build vocabulary for students in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. I found the book to be a useful reference for preparing a handout on prefixes and suffixes for an English conversation class for adult ESL learners. A person seeking to improve his or her own English vocabulary might find portions of the book informative and helpful, but would probably not be interested in those portions of the book dealing with teaching concepts, practices, and techniques. Readers interested in a more in-depth look at Greek and Latin roots in the English language should consider taking a look at Donald M. Ayers, English Words from Latin and Greek Elements.

A good start in vocabulary and spelling projects....

This book is a reasonable place to start for teachers who wish to improve their students' vocabulary acquisition and spelling. It carries numerous suggestions for classroom activities.
I found the prefixes, suffixes, and roots in the Appendix somewhat hard to understand (and I had three years of Latin in high school) and thus implement. I had to use a dictionary to get the precise root of particular English example words. Also, putting the Latin or Greek roots into crossword puzzles or flashcards (or other activities) requires the teacher to take another step in implementing this Latin-and-Greek root-word program. Thus, teachers should know that they will have to spend 10 to 20 hours on the implementation phase of a vocabulary-and-spelling project. For this reason, I took 2 *'s off. I think at least one good example of each implementation would have been useful.
