Great guide book for tourists

I purchased the book to use a travel guide in Bhutan. I thought the book was well written and very informative. I knew very little about Buddhism prior to my trip, so the introductory chapters provided a very informative background.
I didn’t read the book cover to cover, but looked at the history, the sites we were visiting and the symbols – it added tremendously to my visit to Bhutan, adding context and allowing for a better understanding of the sites being visited. Since most of the tourism in the country focuses around the architecture, this book was the perfect "tourist guide."
Since the book is an architecture review, the buildings were grouped by "types" as opposed to geographic locations -- but the sites you are going to visit are easily located in the book. There are ample pictures and graphics which add to understanding.

A book for your reading list before visiting Bhutan

Laura Blake has written a well-researched and documented study of the architectural and design elements of Bhutan's dzongs, monasteries and temples. She amply illustrates the use of Buddhist iconography and the influence of Buddhist history in the region to explain both the structures and their decoration. While this book doesn't have the depth of analysis and historical perspective of the work of Francoise Pommaret, Bhutan's Buddhist Architecture is a great way for anyone who is planning to or has already visited Bhutan to understand and appreciate the country's most significant buildings.
