Great Collection Of Classics Of Organizational Theory
By Dr. Jones
This is another collection of readings that illustrate the intellectual development of an academic discipline. Organization theory is a discipline that is important to understanding how the building blocks of modern society work and how that shapes the behavior of those members within each organization. The readings are representative of what happened in the development of this literature. You also are treated to some commentary explaining why what happened did and explanation for each development. All in all, a great book.

City Design: Modernist, Traditional, Green and Systems Perspectives, by Jonathan Barnett

City Design describes the history and current practice of the four most widely accepted approaches to city design: the Modernist city of towers and highways that, beginning in the 1920s, has come to dominate urban development worldwide but is criticized as mechanical and soul-less; the Traditional organization of cities as streets and public places, scorned by the modernists, but being revived today for its human scale; Green city design, whose history can be traced back thousands of years in Asia, but is becoming increasingly important everywhere as sustainability and the preservation of the planet are recognized as basic issues, and finally Systems city design, which includes infrastructure and development regulation but also includes computer aided techniques which give designers new tools for managing the complexity of cities.

This new, revised edition of City Design includes a larger format and improved interior design allowing for better image quality. The author has also included wider global coverage and context with more international examples throughout, as well as new coverage on designing for informal settlements and new research conclusions about the immediacy of sea level rise and other climate change issues that affect cities, which sharpen the need for design measures discussed in the book.

Authoritative yet accessible, City Design covers complicated issues of theory and practice, and its approach is objective and inclusive. This is a comprehensive text on city design ideal for planners, landscape architects, urban designers and those who want to understand how to improve cities.

Review

"Jonathan Barnett presents a comprehensive yet direct portrait of four principal city design traditions. His engaging book provides a timely use of the history of modernist, traditional, environmental, and systems approaches to engage current issues in urbanism. City Design is an excellent source for beginning students and seasoned practitioners." –Frederick Steiner, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Austin

"Jonathan Barnett has set out to create nothing less than a coherent, all-inclusive framework for ideas about cities, past and present; as a primer for new students of urbanism, City Design is without parallel. For a knowledgeable reader, City Design Is laced with fresh new insights about the familiar warhorses of urban discourse." –Daniel Solomon, Mithun

"Jonathan Barnett’s new edition of City Design expands his brilliant critical framework for understanding the design of cities, also now addressing emerging issues of scale, such as the impacts of climate change and rise of informal settlements from migration and displacement. City Design is an invaluable compendium of global relevance, essential to the built environment professions, city administrators, financiers, politicians, students and academics." –Alec Tzannes, Dean, University of New South Wales, Built Environment

Praise for the First Edition:

"In City Design Jonathan Barnett, who is well known and highly regarded as both an educator and practitioner, has developed an informative textbook covering the history and thought behind urban design and its effect on contemporary cities, concluding with a proposed future of city design….

"The strength of City Design is Barnett’s brilliance at documenting the lineage of urban design thought in an accessible and engaging manner. Throughout, Barnett includes a contextual and historical background that places the shape of the city and the thoughts of those trying to change the form of the city within the context of the time, Moreover, Barnett incorporates examples of the "nuts and bolts’ of planning tools, each of which ties abstract ideas to the real world context of planning and design…

"Jonathan Barnett is a believer (as am I) that architectural ideas have had a vital role in shaping cities. To bolster his assertion he lays out in City Design a rich history of the styles, movements, and ideas that have shaped cities from the Renaissance forward. He puts in context everything from "garden cities" to "megastructures" and places these movements in the broader arc of civic history. Particularly interesting is Barnett’s interweaving of landscape design and architecture, since few books have looked at the interdependence of the two fields and their effects on city design." –Craig Whitaker, Architectural Record

"According to Jonathan Barnett, FAICP, there are four different kinds of city design, and each has its insights and its blind spots. It will take more than one to meet such challenges as climate change, unprecedented growth, and the "inability of local institutions and a wide range of respected design professionals to respond effectively" to major city-design issues following 9/11 and Katrina….The book is brisk, straightforward, and magisterial, and the author, a professor in the University of Pennsylvania's Urban Design Program, seems to have been everywhere, read everything, and assessed it with precision (and without wasting words)….Perhaps this instant classic can do for the rancorous partisanship of city design what no one has been able to do for national politics." –Planning magazine

"Jonathan Barnett has devoted his professional career to the education, theory, practice and intimate understanding of urban design. With City Design, Barnett untangles the complexity of diverse urban design approaches through a careful consideration of four basic design positions on the city; Modernist, Traditional, Green and Systems design. His text provides a much needed sense of perspective for the design of contemporary cities in an increasingly dynamic and globalized urban world." –Alfonso Vegara, President of Fundacin Metrpoli, Madrid, Spain

"The strenght of City Design is Barnett's brilliance at documenting the lineage of urban design thought in an accessible and engaging manner." –Sarah P. Church, University of British Columbia, Journal of Planning Education and Research

"For those who somehow missed Jonathan Barnett's magisterial 2011 book, a second edition is itself improved in design. Now City Design: Modernist, Traditional, Green and Systems Perspectives offers more international cases (Helsinki's 2050 plan aims "to replace modernist highways with boulevards and streetcars") and more discussion of "informal settlements" and the increasingly dire threats posed by sea-level rise resulting from unaddressed climate change." –Harold Henderson, Planning Magazine

This high-quality atlas illustrates a didactic, technical approach in finding the different anatomical structures (bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves) in the lower extremities. The photos are unique in their presentation of the structures.

Palpation is used as a diagnostic tool in clinical examination, and these photos are an important tool for the student and clinician. Line drawings indicating appropriate anatomy introduce each section, and serve as another learning tool . The atlas can be used as a textbook in gross anatomy courses and as a reference for beginning practitioners. It will be of interest to students and practitioners in physical therapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, as well as osteopaths and medical, nursing and physician assistants.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Alejandra Mortiz comes from a long line of powerful brujas (witches), although she has unsuccessfully tried to hide her powers from her family. They dismiss her disinterest as typical teenage behavior and continue to have high expectations of her and her abilities. At her Deathday celebration, a special ceremony where she is expected to take her place as a bruja and embrace her abilities, Alex rebels. Seeing magic as a curse, Alex rejects her destiny by secretly casting a canto (spell) to strip herself of magic but instead banishes her entire family to Los Lagos, the underworld. Horrified by what she has done, Alex is determined to make things right and free them. She embarks on a dangerous quest into the deadly underworld with the aid of the untrustworthy and handsome Nova and her nonmagical BFF Rishi. What they find is certainly more than any of them bargained for. This work is a magical journey from start to finish. Córdova's realistic world-building is the backbone of this engaging read. She spins a fantasy tale based in Latin American culture, with original mythology that rings true. Her focus on family and relationships, along with themes of loyalty, friendship, love, revenge, and being true to oneself, comes across effortlessly. A complex cast of characters drives the plot while keeping readers captivated. VERDICT A compelling must-have for teens.—Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY

It’s that good. Labyrinth Lost revolves around Alex
By Amanda Hill
I bought Labyrinth Lost on Kindle and 20% into the book, I ordered a hardback copy. It’s that good.

Labyrinth Lost revolves around Alex, a bruja living in Brooklyn with her mother and two sisters who also have magical abilities. The problem is that Alex doesn’t want to be a bruja and on the day she’s supposed to receive her blessing from her ancestors, she tries to wish her powers away- and ends up exiling her family to Los Lagos. Realizing her mistake, she sets out to bring them back but runs into a dark and sinister force in this other realm.

When this book first came out, I saw it everywhere. Twitter, tumblr, blogs… I could not escape this beautiful cover. I decided to wait and give it a few weeks to let the hype settle down before I read it because I feel like a lot of times we get swept up in other people’s exuberance for a book and miss the experience for ourselves. What I realized was that the hype around this book isn’t actually hype- it’s just that good.

The plot is strong and the pacing flows. There were several parts where the author could have bogged us down with details and chose not to which kept the plot pushing forward. I’ve seen reviews where people are criticizing the handful of answered questions we were left with and that cliffhanger ending, but hello! Sequel!

I loved all of the characters and I think the author did a pretty good job on hashing out their personalities… except for one character and it was almost enough for me to drop a star from the rating. Alex has two love interests in this story- Nova and Rishi. Nova is fleshed out and given an entire backstory and has a very strong personality. Rishi, on the other hand, we don’t get much about her besides the fact that she likes Alex and she jumped into a portal. That’s it. I can give you all sorts of facts about Nova but really nothing about Rishi. Which was terribly disappointing to me. I felt like I was forced to want Alex to go for Nova because I know all these things about him. Rishi felt very bland and dry and I really didn’t care if anything happened between her and Alex. And this is coming from someone who generally always prefer f/f ships to m/f ships.

There is also PROPER BISEXUAL REPRESENTATION in this book. None of this “half gay” stuff or “gay for you” or “straight for you”. PROPER. BISEXUAL. REPRESENTATION. Let that sink in.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes magical girls, magical boys, sarcasm, and ancestors being sassy.

so I just had to give this one a shot and I'm so glad that I did
By Kindle Customer
I'm not normally one for witch stories, but these are brujas. I have to admit that I don't see a lot out there that mix magical realism with Latinx characters, so I just had to give this one a shot and I'm so glad that I did. The reviews of several other book bloggers, particularly diverse book bloggers may have helped too.
That blurb doesn't really begin to tell the reader the half of it. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect spoilers in the blurb, but simply saying that she hates magic is a little off, in my opinion. She hates magic in that Elsa from Frozen kind of way. She's not ridding herself of a measly amount of power that isn't all that useful anyway or some part of herself that she doesn't feel like she identifies with. She's ridding herself of the dangerous power that she feels overwhelming her ability to control it and out of fear of what might happen were she to lose control. Sure, there are some other reasons in there and they are perfectly understandable 'I wanna be a normal girl' reasons, but I feel like those would have been manageable if not under the colossal weight of her power.

The setup is done well and I felt like I had a good grasp of the characters and where everyone stood when the plot took off. Then there's Los Lagos and the insanity ensues. I enjoyed the darkness of it. Rather than Wonderland, which is what the back cover uses, I found Los Lagos reminded me of Oz. There is an order to things, no matter how unsettling they are and the inhabitants know what that order is. Moreover, each one is just trying to do the best they can within their circumstances in much the same way as the inhabitants of Oz. they have their own motivations that are not tied to our protagonist which makes them a bit unpredictable to her and to the reader.

The worlds that stories take place in are one of my favorite parts of reading, it's why I tend to lean toward paranormal and science fiction and one of the things that's been a new joy to historical fiction. I loved the world building of this book. It's not just Los Lagos but also the world building to create this community of brujas and integrate them into Brooklyn. It's beautifully done.

I look forward to the next installment!

Okay magic.
By Cristal H.
Let me give you some back story. I am a huge Charmed fan. HUGE. I’ve seen the episodes live, seen the repeats on TNT, paid $300 for the Book of Shadows DVD set, and now I binge watch once a year on Netflix. I love this damn show. So, you can imagine my glee when I saw Adam Silvera (sadist who wrote More Happy Than Not) recommend Labyrinth Lost for Charmed fans. You don’t have to tell me twice.

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Córdova is like Charmed in some ways, especially the familial aspect, but in others, it’s worlds removed. This book is a magical adventure that’s filled with enchantment and whimsy, and those who love witches, spells, and being thrown into a supernatural world will appreciate this book. But, beware of a late book lull, as the thrill tapers off, and distraction finds you.

The beginning third of this novel is my favorite, since I went into this read with the Charmed mentality. It features Alejandra, a young witch who is ready to reject her magic, her charming sisters who have embraced their magic, and her mom and extended family who are excited to lead Alex on her journey as a bruja. Also, there’s Rishi, Alex’s best friend who clearly loves and worships her, and Nova, a cute boy who warns Alex to be careful with the powers she plans to reject. The first third takes place in our familiar world, and the events are the prequel to the events mentioned in the synopsis.

See, I didn’t read the synopsis, so I was excited to read a book about sisters navigating their magic in our reality as they attempt to find their place in both worlds. That theme is touched upon a bit with Alex’s angst over accepting her magic, and the competitive, love/hate dynamic that all sisters have, but after ‘the event’ those storylines got tossed aside.

Labyrith Lost then becomes a quest book, in which Alex and Nova (and some surprise visitors) must trek across Los Lagos to save her family and bring them back home. It’s a bit like Oz but with a moderately trippy world compared to Wonderland. At first, the journey is thrilling and intriguing, as Alex and Nova encounter magic beyond their imaginings, and face dangerous trials together. Then, it all starts to feel safe and predictable, Alex’s journey to self-acceptance.

Labyrinth Lost never quite reaches a level of intensity where as a reader you feel you’re about to go off a ledge, and that prevents it from being an outstanding read. There are a few twists at the end that pull you back into the story, but then it ends and you’re left wondering if you want to keep reading about these brujas in future books.

Maybe. I mean, I’m happy with it and I enjoyed reading it this last week, though it wasn’t as gripping as I’d hoped it would be. I wouldn’t recommend this for a die-hard Charmed lover, I’d recommend this for someone who likes the style of witchcraft featured in, hmm…Buffy.

Happy reading!

Brewing Porters and Stouts: Origins, History, and 60 Recipes for Brewing Them at Home Today, by Terry Foster

From the enduring global dominance of Guinness to exciting new craft porters to the resurgence of Russian imperial stouts, porters and stouts are among the most popular beer styles today among homebrewers and craft beer drinkers alike. In Brewing Porters and Stouts widely respected beer and brewing writer Terry Foster presents the history and development of these styles as well as the guidance and expertise necessary to successfully homebrew them yourself.

The book opens with the history of the styles, including the invention of porter in eighteenth-century England, how stouts were born from porters (stouts were originally bolder and stronger or stout porters), the development in the United Kingdom, and introduction to Ireland and eventually the United States, where they remained popular even as they fell out of favor in Britain and surged in popularity as the craft brewing revolution took hold. Foster then goes on to explore the many sub-styles of porters and stouts, providing commercial examples and showcasing some of the most exciting developments in craft brewing today, before breaking down the ingredients, including the various malts as well as special flavorings—such as vanilla, coffee, chocolate, and even bourbon—and finally the yeasts, hops, and waters that are well suited to brewing these styles. Finally, Foster provides a collection of sixty recipes—up to six for each sub-style—showcasing the variety and range of ingredients explored in the book and providing both extract and all-grain instructions.

Brewing Porters and Stouts belongs in the library of every craft beer drinker or homebrewer.

perhaps a better way to distinguish between the two styles
By Sleepy Fox
I have Terry's first book on Porter and wished for more information on this style. I have also notice that old time Porters and Stout recipes were almost interchangeable as though the naming of your beer as Stout or Porter was more of a marketing thing. Well, this book is much more in depth about Porters and Stouts, their origins and, perhaps a better way to distinguish between the two styles. A great read and I thought that the inclusion of BU/GU information for each style/sub-style was extremely helpful. A book I will keep and use.

Great history of the two styles
By M Browning
Foster provides a very solid historical background for these two styles, taking time to explain the roles played by the industry conditions, market trends, and scientific advancements of the day. He meticulously details the differences between the various sub-styles of stout and porter from a recipe and methodology standpoint, while pointing the reader to (relatively) common contemporary commercial examples where possible. There are numerous recipes provided, ranging from full extract to full mash, with clear instructions that should be accessible to homebrewers of all experience levels. Foster appears somewhat apologetic for the part he's played in introducing such a sprawling set of rigid style requirements, and reveals that his own philosophy is much closer to "if it tastes good, keep brewing it". He's also the first to point out when a favorite commercial example for a given style doesn't even meet that style's guidelines.

I read his pale ale book first, and the much more recent update to Stouts and Porters is quite evident. His exposition and recipes assume the reader has access to a significantly greater variety of both beer ingredients and professionally brewed examples (hopefully this is true in most cases). I was particularly interested in his discussion of the renewed interest in producing approximations to historical brown malt, as opposed to crystal or biscuit. After trying traditional brown malt in several recipes, I feel that brown malt does indeed provide a great way to add complexity to your malt bill without producing overly bready flavors.

Overall, this remains one of my favorite style series books of the half-dozen or so that I've read. As always, these books are about historical perspective on style ingredients and procedures. I find them very useful as guides to authenticity of ingredients, and to provide the occasional recipe inspiration. If you are looking to actually learn how to brew at home, I would suggest starting with the standards by Palmer, Noonan, Daniels, and of course, Papazian.

Cheers!

Great book, need glossary
By Emmagemma
I definitely enjoyed reading this book. There are two parts to it: the history of the porter beers and recipes for making a variety of them. The book is well written and held my interest. The recipes are easy to follow and provide enough information so that even a beginning home brewer should have no problem trying them out. I also enjoyed the references to available craft beers in the book and am making an effort to try as many of them as possible. I might even visit the brew pub the author helps at. :-)

The only thing this book lacks is a glossary. The author uses, without any attempt to define, a number of terms related to the science of beer brewing. I found it necessary on several occasions to stop reading and jump onto the internet to figure out what terms mean. (Even though I have been brewing at home for a number of years). A glossary with the definitions of those terms and parameters specifically related to the process of brewing would make this a perfect five-star book.

A Good Book To Have Around
By Tom
As you may already know, this is the pocket-sized version of Mickey Flodin's "Perigee Dictionary of Sign." Filled with clear illustrations, descriptions of each sign and memory aids as well, this book is a wonderful resource to carry with you for "emergencies." Don't depend on this to give you enough vocabulary to have a real conversation, but do consider it a valuable tool in many social circumstances. As a Deaf ASL teacher, I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to carry with them a safety net! :o)

By A Customer
This book helped my whole family learn basic sign language in only a few short hours. I have tried numerous books but this one is the best. I couldn't say more than if you are looking for a book on how to sign...start here it is the best place to start or to brush up on basic knowledge.

I volunteer at a local hospital working with children. Some are deaf. My directer asked me if I wanted to work with these children.I wanted to but I didn't know how to sign. With a few classes and this book I learned how to communicate with these children. Now I really love signing.
